A cardboard stand is transformed into an eco-friendly barfitting

The re-use of cardboard furniture for two events in Monaco and Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main

Leonhard-Heißwolf-Straße 4

At the beginning of the year, we were contacted by CyrusOne, a company specialising in the world of Data Centers, to set up a cardboard stand for the Datacloud Global Congress, a major event hosted within the Grimaldi Forum in the Principality of Monaco. The setting had to be customised so as to give ample space to the company’s graphics and have shapes that paid homage to bees (the focus of their sustainability campaign). At the same time, the solutions had to be fireproof, modular and reusable. Hence the idea to develop a proposal based mainly on hexagonal display modules that would allow customers to create free and flexible compositions, in the style of a beehive. To these elements were then added selected pieces of cardboard furniture chosen from our catalogue: customers can take a break enjoying our “Tisa” chairs and tables; as a reception we used a “Vago” design desk (with a printable surface); to give a green touch to the whole thing, some plants were placed in the “Tessa” planter and into thecompartment display unit “Porola B”. The set-up was carried out in a very short time by our team of fitters, and after the event was over, they went to retrieve the goods to disassemble them and store them at our warehouse.

As we said at the beginning of this Case History, the project was in fact born with the intention of having reuse at its base. And six months later, CyrusOne contacted us to request that the furniture be shipped to Frankfurt am Main, where it would be used to create a lounge bar for the German Data Centers Conference. In this case, it was the customer himself who received the goods and assembled and arranged the furniture: a demonstration of the fact that cardboard furniture is always designed to last and to be easily assembled, thanks to intuitive interlocking solutions. The photos below were taken at the lounge bar in Frankfurt, except for the last 3 where you can see the stand set-up in the principality of Monaco … what can I say, a smart use of an effective and flexible eco set-up!

Customer opinion on cardboard furniture

We close the article with the beautiful words of Hanna Chegrouche, Marketing Coordinator at CyrusOne, on her experience with cardboard furniture

“CyrusOne were thrilled to reuse our 100% recyclable and ecological carboard furniture for the second time this year, showcasing it at the first-ever German Data Center Conference. The intent was to create a relaxing and comfortable lounge space, whereby customers, partners and suppliers could continue to learn about how we are supporting biodiversity across our European sites.

The pioneering design created lightweight yet strong furniture using a folding design and eliminated the need for chemical adhesives. The honeycomb structure was inspired by our honeybees rescued at our site in Amsterdam and flowering plants aligned with CyrusOne’s DC’S for Bee’s and Pollinator Plan initiative. We were able to enhance the design by showcasing our first batch of honey within the honeycomb structure which helped bring our story to life.

CyrusOne takes an active approach to supporting biodiversity: by using NaturDesign furniture, we were able to dismantle the cardboard without damaging it, repackage it and ship it to the next event, reducing waste and recycling the damaged cardboard once it reached its end-of-life. This supports CyrusOne Corporate Commitment to Habitat the fourth pillar to our commitment to the environment.
