FSC certification — what is it in detail? fsc stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an international non-governmental and non-profit organization founded in 1993 in toronto, following the failure of the rio de janeiro earth summit to create a binding treaty on forests.
The idea was — and still is — simple in its ambition: to create an independent certification system that guarantees that wood, paper, and biological resources extracted directly from forests or woodlands sold on the market come from responsibly managed forests. Not on the producer’s word. but based on third-party verifications, on-site audits, and documented traceability.
Today, there are countless environmental claims that are difficult to verify, which is why fsc certification represents a globally recognized standard, capable of connecting a real forest to a real product on the shelf of a real store.
Let’s talk about scale. And the latest data is telling.
At the end of 2025, the global fsc-certified forest area reached approximately 173.1 million hectares — compared to 159.5 million the previous year. a growth that is not accidental: it is the market’s response to an increasingly high demand for traceable and verifiable materials.
In italy, the picture is equally positive. according to the 2025 fsc report, hectares managed under the forest management standard reached 155,750, a 35% increase compared to 2024. active forest management certificates rose from 32 to 37 units (+12%), with 8 group certifications involving a total of 93 members
But the data that deserves even greater attention concerns ecosystem services: forest areas with verified positive impacts — biodiversity conservation, co₂ sequestration, soil protection, water regulation — reached 106,485 hectares, equivalent to 68% of total certified areas, with a 29% growth compared to the previous year.
Within the chain of custody, the industrial side of the certification, in 2024 the number of certificates in italy reached 3,515 units, with over 4,800 production sites involved. the packaging sector leads with 1,443 certifications. textiles follow with 186, growing by 10%.
These are not the numbers of a fad. they are the outlines of a structural transformation of the supply chain.
FSC operates on two distinct yet complementary levels. understanding them is essential to understanding the real value of the certification.
It concerns those who directly manage forests — owners, public bodies, forestry cooperatives. to obtain this certification, woodland management must comply with 10 principles and 70 criteria covering every dimension: environmental, social, and economic.
No intact primary forest can be converted. biodiversity must be protected. the rights of local communities and workers must be respected. Environmental impacts must be monitored and mitigated. an accredited certification body verifies all of this, periodically, on site.
It is the one that most directly interests companies within the supply chain — sawmills, paper mills, printers, packaging manufacturers, furniture factories. The chain of custody guarantees that certified materials remain identifiable and separated from non-certified ones at every stage of transformation, from the forest to the finished product.

It is not an opinion: 82% of consumers trust certified eco-labels over sustainability self-declarations, according to market surveys on the credibility of certifications. and the european regulatory framework is moving in the same direction: the UE Green Claims Directive will oblige companies to provide verifiable evidence and independent certifications for every environmental claim directed at the public.
